FAQ

Why should I pay for an assessment privately, and what good will it do?

Getting your child assessed in school can take up to 2 years. If you book your own independent assessment you then have a report which will prove that your child is in need of additional support. The school is then obliged to assist.

What is dyslexia?

Dyslexia is a neurological condition, which can have genetic causes.

A child, whose attainment is consistently below his or her ability, particularly in literacy and sometimes numeracy, may have undiagnosed dyslexic tendencies and will benefit from learning support.

As well as under-achievement at school, dyslexia can manifest itself in a range of characteristics including:

poor short term memory, poor spelling, inacurrate reading, illegible handwriting, low self-esteem and poor organisational skills

After the assessment how can my child get the additional support he/she requires?

Bright Star run tuition sessions especially for those children with dyslexic tendencies. The sessions not only improve literacy skills but also boost confidence and self-esteem whilst enabling your child to learn in a safe and welcoming environment. All our tutors are expertly trained and qualified, specialising in dyslexia and prices range from £35 to £45 per hour depending on age.

If I have an assessment and it turns out that my child does not have dyslexia, what happens then? Haven't I just wasted my money?

No! The report contains detailed recommendations that you as a parent can carry out. There are Bright Star worksheets and games that you can buy to do with your child.

I don't want to have my child tutored after school, does Bright Star have any other available times?

Absolutely! Once an assessment have been carried out, we can work closely with parents, SENCOs and Headteachers in schools. Specialist dyslexia tuition can then take place in a convenient time in school. This can often work better as the children are more receptive during the day than after school in the evening.
